Coach Q to the Blackhawks — Yikes!

Boy, that didn’t take long.

Old friend Joel Quenneville is back in coaching – at the expense of Blackhawks coach Denis Savard, who got clipped just four games into the season.

Hockey Guy figured Savard was in some peril, due to the arrival of Scotty Bowman in the front office. Bowman wasn’t brought in to pose for pictures and tell stories of the old days.

When the Blackhawks sputtered just a bit — bam! – the team clipped Savard and summoned Coach Q from his Colorado home.

“I felt I had the team going on the right track,” Savard told the Chicago Tribune. “[Wednesday] night was a big win. I know that every game we played we got better. We could have won in New York [last Friday] and we could have won against Nashville [on Monday] but that’s the nature of the business, I suppose. It’s not about Denis Savard. When you work with a team and played for it. … I want them to do well.

“I know I’ve done a lot of good things. Those kids that played under me are good players. Their structure and game got better and I’m proud of that. I know I gave everything I had.”

It will be interesting to see what Quenneville does with young stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Savard was an offensive-minded coach. although he could be tough on skilled guys like Martin Havlat.

Coach Q is more defensive-minded, and a taskmaster to boot. He has one of the great coaching glares in all of sports.

The kids better be ready to tighten their laces and get to work. (This is good news for old friend Matt Walker, a Quenneville favorite from the old days in St. Louis. Coach Q likes having a lumberjack or two in his lineup at all times.)

Quenneville reached the playoffs in 10 of his 11 seasons as a head coach, posting a 438-283-118 regular season record. Playing against his Blackhawks will be no fun at all this season.

Sorry coach Q, but we are really not going to like you any more. The only worse thing you could have done to Blues nation would be to go to the Dead Wings. You will get booed.
