Brad Boyes Breaks Through

On a last-minute power play, Boyes converted an Alex Steen rebound to cut the Canucks lead to 2-1 at the end of the second period.

Yes, that was Steen working the right point on the power play. You haven’t seen that this season, but playoff hockey is all about adjustments.

Steen and Andy McDonald worked the give-and-go play, producing a shot that Roberto Luongo kicked to Boyes on the weak side.

Is this why the Blues went undercover during their off-day practice in Vancouver? Perhaps. That made the trip to a different rink well worth it.

(By the way, that’s the power-play point role Paul Kariya might play IF he ever comes back during these playoffs.)

Again, to beat Luongo, you need to deflections and rebounds. Roberto saw the first shot and stopped it — but Boyes was there on the off side to convert the rebound.

That is why power plays are so important. You get the chance to outnumber the “D” down low. The Blues failed to convert their six earlier opportunities.

And as the series goes on, power plays may be harder to come by as the teams settle in.
