Blues Draft Another D-Man
This time it was Brett Ponich, a raw, Pronger-sized defenseman from Portland of the Western Hockey League.
This kid sounds like a project. A lot of experts had him going in the third round or later. Central Scouting had him way back into the pack.
On the other hand, his size and longer-range potential could fit will with the more offensive-minded defenseman the team has already stockpiled.
The kid did have some female fans in the WHL, as you can see.
Hopefully the Blues did a better job scouting this kid than they did Scott Jackson, a defenseman drafted from Seattle 37th overall in 2005. The Note took him ahead of St. Louisan Paul Stastny, whose father played and scouted for the Blues.
Jackson, drafted for his toughness, never signed and never made it to the NHL. Ouch!

Ouch is right, didn’t know that about Scott Jackson and Paul Stastny.
