Busy Day In Montreal: Bouwmeester To Flames

The depth of this draft should leave lots of impact players for the picking in the second round and beyond. That explains why so many teams were looking to add picks later in this draft.

Here is some more scuttlebutt:

  • With the Flames acquiring the negotiating rights to defenseman Jay Bouwmeester this morning — sending a third-round pick and the rights to defenseman Jordan Leopold to Florida — that could push defenseman Dion Phaneuf onto the trade block. Calgary has the money to sign Bouwmeester to a market-settng contract.
  • With this matter resolved, Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke should have more teams asking about Tomas Kaberle.
  • Experts disagree on whether Henrik and Daniel Sedin are still talking to the Canucks or not. If Vancouver turns the page on those two, that will leave more capital to chase players like Marian Gaborik.
  • If the Canadiens determine that Vincent Lecavalier is staying in Tampa, then Bob Gainey could try to land the Sedin Twins instead. Unlike most teams, he has the cap room to make that happen.
  • Because the salary cap did not dip as expected, the Red Wings may have the flexibility to keep Marian Hossa to a long-term deal. The Red Wings would have to shed some of their supporting cast — like Juri Hudler and Mikael Samuelsson — but they have the Next Wave of young players coming in.
