NHL Draft Winners And Losers

The annual get-together didn’t produce as many fireworks as expected, but plenty of teams got a lot done.

First, let’s look at the winners:

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS: They spent lavishly to land Chris Pronger, but his addition is a team changer. The Flyers want to play for the Cup next year and getting Pronger is a huge step in that direction. He isn’t the physical force Philly fans favor, but he is a shutdown defenseman to play against top lines. He is peerless as an outlet passer, which is vital in the new NHL. Now Philly has to find the money to extend Pronger’s deal, but that is a no-brainer.

ANAHEIM DUCKS: They got old-timers Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne back for another season and turned Pronger into a windfall: Mid-level scorer Joffrey Lupul, blue-chip defensive prospect Lucas Sbisa, two first-round picks (one in 2009, one in 2010) and a conditional third-round pick. That is a heck of a package for a 34-year defenseman with just one year left on his contract.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS: This long-hapless franchise took top gun John Tavares while an arena full of screaming fans approved back on Long Island. This was huge for the marketing department and a big step in the right direction for this hockey team. This kid can score, that we know. Can GM Garth Snow ride the momentum and make a big free-agent score?

CALGARY FLAMES: Darryl Sutter won the negotiating rights to coveted free agent Jay Bouwmeester. Hockey Guy would be shocked if he didn’t seal the deal during the next few days. We’re not sure about this team’s scoring next season, but its goals-against average will go way down. GM Darryl Sutter suggests the team may hang onto Dion Phaneuf, giving his team a rock-solid defense.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING: Victor Hedman was exactly what this team needed: A super-sized version of Nicklas Lidstrom, somebody capable of helping right away. Now let’s see if the owners can get on the same page and figure out what to do with Vincent Lecavalier and how to run the business going forward. Word is many teams are putting together big trade packages for Vinny.

Now, the losers:

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS: Grandstanding GM Brian Burke wanted to make a huge splash this weekend and failed. He didn’t trade up to get one of the coveted forwards atop the draft. He didn’t deal defenseman Tomas Kaberle for a huge return, either. So what happens now? One of the rumored deals, Kaberle for Jonathan Cheechoo, doesn’t sound too exciting.

OTTAWA SENATORS: Would this team really keep Dany Heatley if it can’t get a huge Pronger-like return in a deal? That would be awkward. But Philly DID set a high bar for other teams trying to acquire a superstar player. GM Bryan Murray has his work cut out for him.

FLORIDA PANTHERS: They hung onto Bouwmeester, missed the playoffs, lost GM Jacques Martin, went up for sale and got just a third-round pick for Bouwmeester’s rights. This could be a long, sad year for South Florida hockey fans.

I see Hockey Guy agrees with me, that Calgary stole Bouwmeester from Florida. I sure wish the Blues had pursued this.

Not even worth reading. All I had to see was the winners and losers and know that Jeff didn’t do any homework on the actual draft itself. This had nothing to do with any teams drafting. This was all about what team acquired what name via trade. Calgary a winner by acquiring negotiating rights to Bouwmeester?

Any halfway knowledgeable hockey fan could have wrote something better than this.

How in god’s name do you figure Calgary “stole” Bouwmeester from florida? He was leaving Florida, he’s an unrestricted free agent. Calgary didint get Bouwmeester, they got the rights to negotiate with him exclusively for like 5 days. Im shocked that they got anything to be honest.
