Blues Hang On For 4-3 Victory
The Blues got a late power play when Kirk Maltby was sent off for a ticky-tack face-off interference call. This time, though, they weren’t terribly dangerous with the man advantage.
By failing to convert that power play, the Blues gave Detroit its opportunity to come back and tie the game.
That created some anxious moments as the clock wound down. But the Blues managed to hold on and post a big season-opening victory over one of the NHL’s power franchises.
Look for my column on Kariya to go up elsewhere on this site shortly

GREAT START–beat the Detroits–we are going to enjoy this hockey team!!
Loving the team can’t stand the t.v announcers Darren Pang is not even a fan of the Blues and who is this other guy? No deflection no excitement terrible. Blues worst team acquisitions the last three years? Darren Pang and the other guy!T.v. volume down radio volume up GO BLUES
In case you missed the beginning of the telecast, it was a “joint-crew” from FS Detroit and FS Midwest (I guess because it was in Sweden). John Kelly is still doing play by play from now on, and Darren Pang will sound better when he’s with an all Blues crew. He’s really a much better color commentator than Bernie — Pang has been on a nation-wide hockey broadcast team in the past (remember when they had those?).
