The Russian factor . . .

Makes NHL executives nervous. Hockey Guy loves Nikita Filatov’s explosive potential, but some GMs were concerned about the difficulty of signing and keeping elite Russian players.

The Islanders passed on the chance to take Filatov, trading back two spots to the Maple Leafs’ slot while adding extra picks. Toronto made the swap to add stay-at-home defenseman Luke Schenn.

So the Blues Jackets took Filatov sixth overall. Will he become another Nikolai Zherdev, a enigmatic coach killer? Or will he be another Pavel Bure?

Columbus showed some heart by taking this kid after suffering tough experiences with Zherdev and Sergei Fedorov. But talent is talent and this player was the best left on the board.

The Blue Jackets also moved first- and third-round picks to Philadelphia for R.J. Umberger and a fourth-r0und pick. Umberger is a local kid, true, but that was a large price to pay.
