It’s hard to miss Amigo’s Cantina in Kirkwood. Bright red, yellow, blue, orange and green shingles line the exterior wall. At the end of this colorful rainbow, you’ll find something better than a pot of gold — a good Mexican restaurant.
Saturday night was opening night, and the place was busy. I held out as long as I could, giving them an hour to work out the kinks. There were a few missteps with the service, but they were easy to overlook due to the reduced-price beer on opening night.
The menu is limited right now but hints at cuisine more creative than the standard fare. I tried Roberto’s Special Carnitas ($9.75), which were good, and my dining companion opted for the Stuffed Poblano Pepper ($9.75), which was outstanding. The latter was stuffed with chicken, raisins, walnuts and spices and topped with homemade goat cheese sauce.
The salsa is fresh, and the watering-hole ambiance is sure to attract the after-work crowd. Seating is limited so arrive early or risk being stuck at the bar with potent margaritas.
