New Friar Tuck liquor store is impressive
Bigger isn’t always better, but when it comes to beer selection, I don’t see a downside.
Friar Tuck opened recently at 9053 Watson Road, and it has an amazing variety of liquor.
Make a pilgrimage to the back wall to see one of the largest and coldest selection of beers in town. It’s OK to kneel down and thank God. The friar would approve.
I couldn’t find my Holy Grail of six packs, XXXX from Australia, but this time of year, you can’t go wrong with a good hefeweizen and a slice of lemon to beat the heat.
About half the 18,600-square-foot store store is dedicated to wine. Grab a bottle and some summer sausage before heading out for a late summer or early fall picnic.
Single Malt Scotch lovers will appreciate the small case of stogies, which are reasonably priced.
The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. During my last visit, an employee enlightened me about the smoothness of a bottle of 1792 bourbon, forcing me to purchase one to find out for myself. Yes, it is.
Two qualities separate Friar Tuck from typical grocery stores — selection and service. And the best news? They have gift cards.

Welcome to the media circus. I'm Charles Williams, online entertainment editor and operator of this ride.
This is a central IL chain (Springfield, Champaign, Bloomington I think)…glad you get to enjoy it!
Good to hear! However, at 8,600 sq feet, Lukas still beats in by a mile at 20-some-odd thousand sq feet.
The store is actually 18,600 sq. ft.
Do they sell Stag? : )
XXXX???? *boggle*
There is no such thing as quality Australian beer. Hopefully you won’t find any in the store.
XXXX might not be the best beer but it has sentimental value. Brings back good memories.
I frequent the Central IL versions of Friars once in a while, if you are wanting rare and unique beers you need to ask for them as they won’t be on the shelf.
Friars claims to have every beer available in Missouri.
Maybe they could micro-brewed some of that old 905 rot gut beer I drank when I was a teen. Then again, maybe not.
Is this located in the the old Value City store on Watson?
Old 905 rot gut beer sounds dangerous, but it’s probably safer than the raisin/rice wine I used to make at home. My friend once made tomato wine. Don’t even ask about the taste. We were young and foolish.
