Anyone who attended yesterday’s free community outreach concert by the IN UNISON Chorus knows that summer is definitely here. With the air conditioning out, the crowd resorted to waving hand fans. They cooled themselves, but the feet-stomping, hand-clapping gospel only raised the heat — as it should.

The concert was held at Union Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 1141 Belt Ave. Soprano Gwendolyn Wesley was phenomenal singing “I Praise Him ‘Cause I Should.” And trumpet player Joshua Williams, 19, played “Grand Russian Fantasia,” prompting a standing ovation by many in the crowd.

If you missed out, try to catch a future performance. More information on the IN UNISON Chorus can be found here.

This was a most rewarding concert for the choir. The composer and arranger, Dr. Andre J. Thomas held a workshop with the chorus on Saturday, before the concert. Performing the works of an artist that is also directing is always a rich experience. Dr. Thomas’ insights into his work was inspiring. He is so full of knowledge, he just pours it out on you. And funny…the man is funny.

This may have been a free concert for the community, but the In Unison chorus gave it all they had. It was truly a gift to those who attended. It was a joy to be part of it.

Thank you to the SLSO for its support of this wonderful choir. Thank you to our director, Robert Ray, who gives it his heart and soul.

Hello all! I’m a member of the chorus and yes it was HOT HOT HOT! Dr. Thomas was simply amazing. Being a part of the In Unison Chorus is absolutely fabulous and Dr. Robert Ray is simply priceless! What a privilege to participate in such a wonderful group. We are going into our 15th year. Thanks for the support!

I am a member of the chorus also, and I was unable to perform for this concert, but I was able to attend the concert. It was a very moving concert to say the least. Dr. Ray is truly a wonderful conductor, and an even better person and friend. He is truly a great leader. The music was phenominal and the quest himself was an inspring figure. This was one concert that I wish I could have made time for.
