Some Americans just won’t go see a movie with subtitles. And many of them are grown-ups who still watch cartoons. So for that particular demographic, an English-language version of the Oscar-nominated “Persepolis” is coming to theaters on April 11.

The animated “Persepolis,” based on the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, is an autobiographical story about a rebellious, westernized girl growing up during the Iranian revolution of the ’70s and ’80s. The French-language version, with its bold black-and-white style, was nominated for best animated feature. The English-language version will feature the voices of Sean Penn, Gena Rowlands and ageless rocker Iggy Pop.

Ordinarly I’d scoff at this kind of pandering to America’s provincialism, but since it’s a cartoon, it shouldn’t lose too much in translation, and maybe it will get a few more people to expand their worldview.
