My favorite film of the year….

It’s a documentary called “Girls Rock!” and it’s screening Friday through Sunday, and again on Tuesday and Thursday, at 8 p.m. at Webster University.

It’s about the Rock “n” Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Ore., where hip chicks age 8-18 learn they’re allowed to crank it up and feel good about themselves. What could have been cutesy or condescending turns out to be inspirational, funny and wise. The creative ferment and the patient, punk-rockin’ teachers make some scary feelings bubble to the surface; but by the end of five days, the girls have started band, written songs and performed them for an audience of 700.

My favorite tune is the one in which an eight-year-old screamer hopes that San Francisco burns down–so mommy won’t keep going there on business trips.

Dig the trailer:

Turn it up, all the way to eleventy!

If you enjoyed the film and want to share the movement of Girls Rock with other girls, get the new “Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls” book publishing in June from Chronicle Books. It is written by the Portland camp and will inspire girls to start a band, write songs, record and album and rock out!
