The Hi-Pointe is safe and sound
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Film buffs and preservatonists alike are concerned about a rumor that the venerable Hi-Pointe Theatre is closing. But our good sources tell us that after shuttering tonight, the theater will reopen under new management in about three weeks. After some minor cleanup (and the possible acquisition of a liquor license), it will be ready for the summer blockbusters.
Built in 1922 at the intersection of McCausland and Skinker Avenues, the single-screen Hi-Pointe is the oldest continuously operating movie theater in the metro area. It’s surely the coolest, with its giant marquee, turquoise seats and neo space-age lobby. And the upstairs men’s bathroom has been voted the best in town.
