Make way for Mr. Damon

An infomant tells us that a scene for a new Matt Damon movie will be shot tomorrow (Friday) at Lambert Airport. But don’t go there hoping to get chummy with the very likable movie star.

For one thing, movie crews are generally hostile to gawkers. When the equally affable Tim Robbins was shooting “The Lucky Ones” at Lambert last year, he had a bodyguard clear his path every time he needed to go to the bathroom.

For another thing, Damon might not actually be there. The movie is a political thriller called “The Informant,” which has been filming in central Illinois. But director Steven Soderbergh (who previously shot “King of the Hill” in St. Louis) has been at the Cannes film festival this week, where his four-hour “Che” was slammed by most critics yesterday. (Me, I’m anxious to see it.) So this might be a second-unit crew, filming a non-essential scene without the director or star.

The movie takes place in the early ’90s, so the extras have been told to dress accordingly, with pleated khakis and no goatees. If you’re like me, you get all misty-eyed just thinking about those days.

Matt Damon arrived at the airport last night, was gracious as all get-out, mobbed by fans and politely chatting and signing autographs for 15-20 minutes.

Hi i was an extra at lambert airport,on friday may 23rd.I was asked to be in a scene as an extra in a pub scene they were filming at the airport. There were about 35 of us in the pub scene,it was a lot of fun to see how the director works up close. The attention to every detail is amazing. The way they set up this pub,was really cool.I was lucky enough to be placed with the most beautiful girl in the room, her name was elaine, our booth was directly across from damons table. As the scene was shot matt damon would walk into the pub, past our table and sit down, with three other guys and the scene started. We were told to act natural, and act as though we were having a conversation, without actually speaking out loud. They ran through several takes, and shot the scene from different angles. After a few takes it was a wrap.We had a lot of fun,and i must say the cast and crew were all very gracious with us,they took care of us,and fed us very well. What i learned from all of this,is however small a part you play in something like this, it takes a team to make it happen. It was wonderful to be part of such a professional team for the day.Kevin Kennedy Springfield Illinois
