No kidding, Sherlock: Two Holmes movies on the docket

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

It’s happened with asteroids and volcanoes, Robin Hoods and Truman Capotes. Now we hear that in 2009 there will be competing movies about Sherlock Holmes.

Cambridge-educated Sacha Baron Cohen (”Borat”) is set to star as the brilliant detective, with nitwit American Will Ferrell as Dr. Watson, in a comedy to be produced by Judd Apatow.  That’s enlightened casting.

Meanwhile, the rejuvenated Robert Downey Jr. will be trading his Iron Man suit for a tweed hat in an action-oriented Sherlock Holmes flick by Guy “Mr. Madonna” Ritchie.  To revive both his career and the Holmes brand, Ritchie needs to come out with four barrels blazing. Maybe he’ll emphasize the most obvious think that Holmes and Downey have in common: a well-documented dependence on cocaine (a.k.a. “the seven-percent solution”).
