According to my sundial, it’s still outdoor-movie season, and tonight there’s a dandy of a double feature at Laumeier Park. And it’s free.
To stoke anticipation for an exhibit of John Waters’ photos next month, the sculpture park is screening two of the crackpot director’s best-loved movies. At 7 p.m. , it’s the original “Hairspray,” with Rikki Lake as a beehived Baltimorean whose dance moves ignite the civil-rights movement. Then at 9 it’s “Polyester,” starring Dvine as the frustrated wife of “artistic” drive-in theate operator Tab Hunter. Waters is a big fan of drive-ins—he’s filmed a few of his flicks at the big and beautiful Bengie’s in suburban Baltimore—so the lawn at Laumeier is a fitting venue. If you haven’t been there before, that’s a dirty shame. The address is 12580 Rott Road (just south of Watson and east of I-27) in Sunset Hills. Bring your own blanket and cooler, but no readily-detectable glass bottles.
