It’s a 3-D world, whether you like it or not
Joe Williams
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Jeffrey Katzenberg, the leg of the Dreamworks triumvirate who is not Steven Spielberg or David Geffen, says that 3-D technology is about to take over our lives. And not just in movie theaters. The Hollywood mogul predicted on Sunday in a speech to the International Broadcasting Convention that 3-D movies will soon outnumber 2-D movies and that the technology will be incorporated into “all facets of our lives and our culture,” including the Internet, laptops, computers and handheld devices.

To speed the transition, the entertainment industry will need to design cool 3-D glasses that the public will actually want to wear. Katzenberg’s working on it, with his friends at Luxottica and Oakley:

“They are about to introduce a transition lens that where you go outside its your sunglasses, and when you go into the movie theater it transitions into 3-D glasses. People are going to own their own glasses. I think from a fashion standpoint and a coolness standpoint people will want to have their own glasses. I think that will be among the many changes that will come along.”

I wonder: Has Katzenberg actually seen “Journey to the Center to the Earth” or “Fly Me to the Moon” or any of the other 3-D movies that were supposed to revolutionize entertainment? Grafted onto a boring story, the 3-D effect is flat-out annoying.
