One of the reasons I kinda liked the new comedy “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” is because it all happens in one night, as two smart teens realize they’re made for each other while driving around New York in a Yugo. (Another reason is that when I was in high school, I was a lot like Michael Cera, so I’m glad too see a geek get the girl.)
A lot can happen in one night, especially when you’re a tireless teenager. (I still recall all the details of the KXOK Back To School Spectacular at Six Flags on Sept. 8, 1972.)
Off the top of my head, here are some interesting movies that take place more or less in one day:
- Rebel Without a Cause (a knife fight,a hot rod race, a love scene with Natalie Wood and a shoot out with cops—that’s a full day)
- Career Opportunities (AKA “One Wild Night,” in which lucky stiff security guard Frank Whaley gets locked in a store with Jennifer Connelly)
- The All-Nighter (in which Susannah Hoffs graduates from college and thinks the best is yet to come, poor thing)
- After Hours (Martin Scorsese’s most under-rated film and my favorite depiction of nighttime New York)
- Go (a drug deal gone wrong makes for very untraditional white Christmas)
- Dazed and Confused (which takes place at a keg party on the same night I graduated from high school)
- American Graffiti (’nuff said)
I’ll be up late trying to think of more.
