Exclusive to the Post-Dispatch:

Will Smith, the most popular movie star in the world, will be in St. Louis on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Smith will headline a red-carpet event at the AMC Creve Coeur 12 cinema for the local premier of his new movie “Seven Pounds,” which opens nationwide Dec. 19. The event next Wednesday begins at 5:30 p.m.. Fans attending the free event are encouraged to donate food items, which will benefit the St. Louis Area Foodbank and Urban League in partnership with the St. Louis Rams. Donors will get a chance to win a ticket for the movie screening, which begins at 7:00 p.m.

Smith, 40, is the rapper-turned-actor who has starred in such hits as “Independence Day” and “Men in Black.” Twice he has been nominated for an Academy Award as best actor, for “Ali” in 2001 and “The Pursuit of Happyness” in 2006.

In “Seven Pounds,” Smith plays a troubled IRS agent who is compelled to help seven strangers. The project has been shrouded in mystery, but it was directed by Gabriele Muccino, who made “The Pursuit of Happyness,” so it’s likely to be a heart-tugger.  (A trailer is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rp3hrkW5eUY)

The Creve Coeur cinema is at 10465 Olive Street Road, just west of Lindbergh Boulevard.

Expect to see Rams players and other local luminaries, gathered around the fountain in the parking lot. This is big, St. Louis, so get there early.

I’d alert the press but you already know. Seriously, I wouldn’t go see Will Smith if he were across the street and the tickets were free.

I love Will Smith and I’d love to see him in person. He’s a great talent and a great human being. My kids love him as Fresh Prince. I hope St. Louis shows him a big welcome.

Will Smith used to be a stand-up guy, until he converted to Scientology. I have lost all respect for him since. I won’t see Hancock, and I plan to boycott all his films in the future.

“most popular movie star in the world”

Post-Dispatch most famous paper in the world for using unsupported and uncited sources.

Will Smith is what you would call a “product of special education”. You know the “idiot class” in high school that we’ve all been told are the students that our children should look up to. The ones that say “ax”, “why-e at”, and call everyone “Dawg” instead of by their name.

Will Smith was voted the most popular movie star. You must not read the papers. He is a very intelligent, caring person. Evidently, you don’t watch the right shows to find out what he’s really about.

“the most popular movie star in the world”

That is a little exaggerated. I like Will, but come on.

Everyone who says that ‘Will Smith is the greatest actor in the world’ is an exaggerated claim is definitely right. I’m sure he’s a good nice guy don’t get me wrong. I like him better as a rapper if you ask me. He can definitely tell a great story (listen to ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’).

Wow, how people can whine about Will Smith is beyond me. He’s a decent family guy (not that it’s a job prerequisite for a movie star). He’s coming to this 2nd rate town that can’t even fund their mass transit system to raise awareness about charities and people talk smack about him and make it both political and racial. What a bunch of retards.

I think Will Smith is a standup guy. I don’t want to judge the man on his beliefs or anything, just as long as it doesn’t encourage him to blow himself up to be with 12 virgins. He’s a great entertainer, and yes there appears to be a little hater-aide in the house this morning. If you were to put his picture up with five other actors 98% - 100% would know who he is.

Everyone have a peaceful day.

I’d say that some of you just can’t read but apparently you do read the tabloids. The Will & the Smith family are not Scientologists. They have some friends who are. I have some friends who are Baptists. It’s good to be tolerant.
The article above says most popular - not the greatest.

For sho Dean! Had to share this with the ‘hometown Will’! Never met someone else who definitely had the same ‘coolness/mojo’ as Will until you. LOL Will’s the man! Some people just don’t want to give the man props where deserved.

Smith is, statistically and by a vote of fans, the most popular movie star in the world. That’s not a value judgment on my part. He has had a record eight consecutive films gross more than $100 million dollars.

As for Beijing Beer’s comment about Smith’s upbringing, that is equally uninformed. Smith’s mother was an educator. He attended a Philadelphia high school for gifted students and considered attending MIT. Here is a link to a video of him solving a Rubik’s Cube in 55 seconds, which is not unprecedented or inexplicable but nonetheless impressive:

I have met Will Smith. He is gracious and articulate. That’s the standard toward which I will steer the commentary section of this blog.

Beijing beer evidently got his facts from the lead-in to Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which indicated the Will Smith character had gotten into trouble in Philly and was shipped to the left coast to get out of it. Sad when you can’t distinguish reality from TV Land
