Animated “Delgo”: Worst. Opening. Ever.
Last Friday an animated movie called “Delgo” opened in theaters. It wasn’t exactly a limited release–it played on more than 2000 screens. But it earned less than half a million dollars, making it arguably the biggest flop in film history, with an average of less than $300 per screen.
Never heard of “Delgo”? Surely that’s the problem. Despite having a pricey voice cast (including Freddie Prinze Jr., Val Kilmer, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Eric Idle), advertising was scant and the independently distributed flick wasn’t made available for review. I won’t say that critics put a hex on such movies, because I’m sworn to secrecy about our powers, but you can read between the lines.
