Indie double feature at Hi-Pointe Thursday: “Box Elder,” “On the Road with Judas”
Joe Williams
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

In the era of streaming video and social networking, the rules of movie distribution are changing rapidly. But the indie filmmakers behind the Range Life entertainment Tour are reverting to an old-fashioned model: barnstorming city-by-city. The road show is the brainchild of director Todd Sklar of Columbia, Mo., whose collegiate comedy “Box Elder” played here earlier this year. That slacker satire returns to our fair city on Thursday, for a screening at the Hi-Pointe at 9 p.m. Here’s the R-rated trailer:

Preceding ”Box Elder” at 7 p.m. is J.J. Lask’s puzzle-box comedy “On the Road with Judas,” which drew comparisons to meta-movies like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” when it bowed at Sundance in 2007. Here’s the trailer  for “On the Road with Judas”:

Alas, it never get the major roll-out that some were expecting; but the Range Life Tour is trying to put the power back in the hands of the filmmakers. (It some cities, the tour also includes two other festival-tested comedies: Bob Boyington’s self-explanatory “Registered Sex Offender” and Christopher Jaymes’ showbiz spoof “In Memory of My Father,” which features a soundtrack by indie darlings Belle and Sebastian.)

Tickets for the St. Louis double feature are a mere $7 at the Hi-Pointe (1005 Mccausland, next to the big Amoco sign.). Filmmaker Todd Sklar will be on hand to answer questions after his movie. For more information about the films, visit http://tour.rangelifeentertainment.com/. (And if you take a shine to Sklar & Co., pencil in their “after-party” on Friday night at Off Broadway, featuring the swell St. Louis art-pop band Gentlemen Auction House.)
