The same weekend as the Oscars, there is a maverick event in Santa Monica called the Independent Spirit Awards that honors the top art-house films of the year.  The leading contenders this year, with six nominations apiece (including best picture, director and actress), are the immigrant drama “Frozen River”; the recovery drama “Rachel Getting Married”; and the poverty drama “Ballast.” The latter two films are still playing in St. Louis and I recommend them.

Other best picture nominees are “The Wrestler” and “Wendy and Lucy,” which are coming to St. Louis soon.

The complete list of nominees is here. The award ceremony will be broadcast on the IFC cabnle channel on Saturday, Feb. 21.

whoa!!!

why isn’t that Larry the Cable Guy flick listed here? It doesn’t get much more artsy than that…after all, he is the PG-13 version of Sam Kinison or Andrew Dice Clay…why no props???

LMAO
