Cage and Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant”: remake or not?
Joe Williams
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

There’s a new trailer for “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” a very sardonic cop movie starring the wayward Nicolas Cage and directed by the esteemed Werner Herzog (”Fitzcarraldo”).

The movie, slated for release at the end of the year, is not explictly a remake of “Bad Lieutenant,” the 1992 film in which Harvey Keitel played a corrupt New York City cop addicted to cocaine and gambling. Although Cage plays a similarly unhinged policeman, this movie is set in the Big Easy. In an interview last year, Herzog said the new movie represented the continuing adventures of an iconic character, like James Bond. He added that he has never actually seen the original “Bad Lieutenant” and didn’t know much about director Abel Ferrara (who is pretty ticked off about the whole thing).

Those who have seen the original can judge for themselves. This is the new trailer (explicit content–parental guidance is strongly suggested):

My feeling: With a great director like Herzog, an oddball like Cage and co-stars including Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer and Fairuza Balk, this could be a knockout–and it ought to be able to stand on its own without leveraging the title of another notorious film.
