Shocker: Sean Penn loves wife more than “The Three Stooges”

Actor Sean Penn, the reigning Oscar winner for “Milk,” is taking a hiatus from Hollywood so he can mend his marriage with Robin Wright. The couple, married since 1996, has separated twice in the past two years, and Penn, 48, had filed for divorce. They have two teenage sons.

Penn has pulled out his role in a thriller about Mexican drug lords called “Cartel.” And his sabbatical may last until the planned August start date for “The Three Stooges.”

The “Stooges” biography has been one of the most anticipated projects in Hollywood. The Farrelly brothers (”There’s Something About Mary”) have been developing it for a decade, and they had signed up an intriguing cast: Penn as Larry, fellow Oscar winner Benicio Del Tor as Moe and Jim Carrey as Curly. Now fans of the abusive Stooges must feel like they’ve been poked in the eye.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the Stooges brand of burlesque slapstick, but I was always fond of Larry Fine–because as a bushy-haired boy I resembled him and because in the “Stooges” shorts, he was more of a victim than an instigator.  Off screen, Fine was an accomplished violinist. A biography titled “Larry: The Stooge in the Middle” by his younger brother, Morris Fineburg, quotes Moe Howard as saying that Fine was the best actor in the troupe.  (Whether he could have won an Oscar for playing a martyred gay-rights leader is another question altogether.)

Unlike you, Joe, I like the Stooges. However, as long as Jim Carrey is cast as Curly, I hope the movie never gets made.

What about Joe Besser? Who is playing him?

I didn’t know about this “Stooges” biography until reading this article, and am now anxious for it to be made. The fact that Sean Penn will not be in it makes the movie much more attractive.

I’m glad he’s out of the film, because it would have been an insult to the memory of the late, great, Larry Fine and the rest of the Stooges to have a fascist like Sean Penn in the role.

To Mary (above): I’m glad to see that someone else admires Larry like I do; but I must point out that you’ve misused the term “fascist.” Fascism, as a political ideology, is generally accepted to mean an allegiance between corporate wealth and government, as in the avowedly fascist Mussolini regime in Italy or Hitler’s right-wing regime in Germany. Penn is a self-described liberal. There’s no such thing as “liberal fascism,” notwithstanding the tile of a recent book. It’s as meaningless a term as “conservative communism.” If you want to criticize Penn’s political beliefs, fine. But extrapolating leftward from “liberal,” you’ll find terms such as “pinko,” “tree-hugger” and the newly revived “socialist,” but not “fascist.” That jack-booted monster lurks on the right.

As a fan of the three stooges I hope that something classic can be made. I am not sure of the current line up but I am sure no matter what I will watch it, if not at the movies when it hits the TV (or maybe DVD). The 3 stooges off screen life probably makes for more story line than their onscreen antics. Either way, hope to see it.
