“Transformers 2″: The worst reviewed blockbuster of all time?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

When I gave the new “Transformers” sequel a mixed review, acknowledging its technical heft but criticizing its ideological emptiness, it turns out I was being nicer than most other critics. The movie, which earned more than $200 million through its first weekend, is on track to earn at least $400 million–in which case it would become the worst reviewed movie in the all-time Top 10 list of moneymakers. On the consensus Web site Rotten Tomatoes, the percentage of reviews of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” that are rated “fresh” (i.e., “favorable”) is a dismal 20 percent.

Some readers insist that critics are out of touch with public tastes; yet a new analysis by the Associated Press shows that the highest grossing movies of all time received overwhelmingly positive reviews on  Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic:

Of the eight movies that have grossed more than $400 million domestically, four scored 90 percent or higher on Rottentomatoes: “The Dark Knight,” “Spider-Man,” “E.T. the Extra-terrestrial” and “Star Wars.” Two others, “Shrek 2″ and “Titanic,” topped 80 percent.

The other two had mixed reviews but still came in far higher than “Revenge of the Fallen,” with “Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace” scoring 63 percent and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” rating 53 percent.

This year’s biggest hits so far had terrific scores, “Up” with 97 percent and “Star Trek” with 95 percent. Both movies have grossed about $250 million, a number the “Transformers” sequel will soar past by next weekend.

Like most of my peers, I gave positive reviews to “Up,” “Star Trek” and the other breakout hit of the summer, “The Hangover.” (I also said that “Transformers 2″ delivered a lot of bang for the buck–I just wanted a little less bang and a little more brain. “The Dark Knight” proved that they could co-exist.)

As I always say, in matters of personal taste, there is no right or wrong, and I urge readers to consult the consensus sites. Critics aren’t outsiders–they’re just reasonably literate people who see a lot of movies. If most of them hate or love a movie, it turns out the public often feels the same way.

Except, perhaps, in the case of “Transformers 2.”

I don’t put much stock in movie critics. Pan a movie and I’ll love the movie. On the other hand, glorify a movie and i may dislike it. For instance “Titanic”. I still cannot get thru it. I feel they lump all the movies in a pot and unconsciously compare them to each other.

I’ll be the first to admit I loved the movie and yet thought it was a poorly put together movie in many respect as well. Why?
Well I guess it’s what you expect to get out of a movie. As a 31 year old male I have been a huge fan of Transformers since I was 6. I loved the original cartoon, but it is, especially the first season, a terrible show, but I loved it then and still do now. Because the kid in me enjoys unplugging and enjoying something that’s simply cool to watch and not think too much about. Trust me I love a plethora of art house, independent film, intellectual stories as well and when I go to watch those that is what I expect. This was just a lot of fun…even with the ridiculous plot points, continuity and storyline errors and flat human acting…Transformers is about robots, always has been always will. Lastly “Shrek 2″ and “Titanic” weren’t great movies either. In fact I equate Titanic to being Pearl Harbor on a boat that sinks….it simply uses a historical event (briefly) to make an extremely boring film that made a ton of money. I use critic sites like Rottentomatoes to get an idea…everyone loved Pans Labyrinth, not me! Everyone hates Transforms 2, not me! You’re right though there is no right or wrong when it comes to personal taste.

I went with my son, and thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

I found all of the characters to be engaging and true to themselves. The action was awesome as were the special effects.

I find reveiwers most useful when they are consistent with themselves. I can then rely on that relationship to mine.

I agree with Joe and the wider critical population about less than half the time, but I have to say he went pretty easy on Transformers 2 compared to other reviews I’ve read. One reviewer (NYTimes I think)used the word ‘cretinous’ in the very first sentence. For me, once you’ve read a reviewer for awhile you get an idea of why they like the films they like, and why they dislike certain movies. You may disagree on a fundamental level but you have to read between the lines a little to determine whether or not you’ll enjoy the film yourself. I personally have a use for Joe’s reviews each week as a barometer of whether or not I’ll like something. Regardless of how he rates the films, it is the reasons why that are important. Some detail or plot device he hates might be something you like or can at least stomach. I will admit that Joe annoys the heck out of me pretty consistently and I can usually tell whether or not he’ll pan a movie before it is released. However, I have to give him credit for holding back on Transformers and giving a pretty straightforward and honest review. I’m going to see the movie tonight and I’ll probably agree with most of Joe’s analysis on the film’s plot holes (which I’m sure are more numerous than the first film) and the lack of a human element, but still not feel like I wasted my money. Growing up with Transformers I could probably listen to Peter Cullen’s Optimus Prime voice read a phone book for 2 hours and only feel slightly screwed out of my money.

Critics, smiticks…

Everyone views movies through their own “rose colored glasses.” Some people like scifi. Some like horror, or tear jerkers or action movies.

I seem to recall that Dirty Dancing was panned as well as some previously mentioned here. If you like scifi, action and something to “complete the story”, go see it!

What movie did you see?? This movie was awesome! Non stop action, a great story and the good guys win! Plus the robots were funny and entertaining. Special effects were amazing! Go see it people. I would pay to see it again.

I’m not really of fan of these kind of movies, but when did it become fab for any “common joe” to be a notable movie critic?I guess my cat will be the next big movie critic—–Transformer 2 ***** stars-Gizmo The Cat

I thought it was a fun movie. The special effects were excellent,(no surprise there, we all knew they would be). The movie seemed a bit long to me, but other than that I enjoyed it. Sure, it wasnt “Gone with the Wind” or “Apocalypse Now”, but it wasnt trying to be. Come on people, what do you want, Its a movie based on an 80s cartoon about alien robots that disguise themselves as cars!
If you want to see an overhyped piece of garbage and completely waste 2 hours of your life, go see “Twilight”.

UGH! It was full of mindless racist jokes/stereotypes, the action shots were nauseating and far to close in to enjoy the fun of seeing massive alien transforming robots and the storyline was abyssmal.

I loved Transformers growing up and so did my husband. He admits to crying when Optimus Prime died in the original show. But in this movie, it was incredibly transparent that he was going to come back, so his death held little meaning or sentiment. Overall it was terrible! But we still contributed our money to that gross $ figure :) I think many fans were disappointed, but people will see it just because - especially those of us nostalgic for our childhood. No different than Phantom Menace - most fans will agree it was terrible, but we still all spent our hard earned money to see it!

I plan to see it tomorrow night and have been anticipating it’s release since I first saw a trailer during Super Bowl. I expected the cheesy cartoon style when I went to see the original two years ago, and was very pleasantly surprised when it was a very good movie. I expect more of the same from this one.

Transformers is entertaining.
Its’ “ideological emptiness” is ok…. What “Ideological Fulfillment” came from Dark Knight with a druggie doing a great job of robbing a bank and holding the mob hostage for millions?
We saw Transformers on Tuesday evening… the theater was 50% full. Everyone enjoyed the film and most stayed through the credits looking for more!

“Transformers 2 - Ticket to Hell” (renamed it that myself) was absolutely terrible……but I realize I am not the target audience for this movie. I am sure for every red-blooded 16 to 22 year old male, it was pure ecstasy. For me,there were 45 explosions too many, every scene with Megan Fox (who IS absolutely drop dead gorgeous, I will admit)was a soft-core porn moment where her lips were even puffier with her lip gloss oozing all over the place even after she is running around in Egypt and yelling out “Sam”, was so loud I honestly was looking for anything I could plug my ears with and just really obnoxious moments all throughout the film (especially the two “gangsta” robots that were thrown in - JarJar Binks comes to mind).
Critics were spot on with this film…..I saw it anyway because I truly enjoyed the first one, but this sequel was a (yes, I am going to say it) real clunker!!!

I still have heard nothing regarding an actual review from you, Joe. The Transformers storyline is huge, but difficult to place in a 2 hr action film that is meant to attract a diverse audience. This movie is simple - action, graphics, and familar star actors. Sure, they could have made a better script for the film, but - lets be honest - how many would go see it? It would be just another cult film for the “geeks”. Expect more of the same when G.I. Joe hits the big screen.

I do put some stock into reviews. Me & some friends were gonna go see Year One, & it was getting such bad reviews, that we decided to stay away from that one.

When Transformers II was getting just average to a bit below average reviews, still didn’t hesitate to buy my IMAX ticket for it online. I figured how could they go wrong, & I’m glad I listened to that hunch. This is an entertaining summer blockbuster. It doesn’t need some great big grandiose plot. It needs exactly what Michael Bay thrust into it: $h!t blowing up, funny one-liners & multiple panty shots & shots of Megan Fox running in slow motion 3, count ‘em, 3 times in the last half hour w/a low cut shirt on.

Ample Fox=Cinematic Gold!!! He he ;-)

The only people that enjoy Michael Bay movies are 8 year olds and morons. Which is why it’s no surprise that Transformers would make so much money.

Want to know how to make millions? Give people flashy lights, loud noises, and a pair of breasts to stare at.
“Me like! Big robot go boom! Girl look purty! Brain…shutting down…feels so good…”

I took my 8 year old to see the movie last week and we loved it. I will admit that there were a few underlying things that struck some concern, more so for the eyes of an 8 year old. Other than that it was awesome. The effects were as good, if not better, than the first one. We’re already counting down until III comes out, hopefully next summer!

I can’t wait to see what all the critics who criticized Transformers for being rude/offensive/racist have to say about the upcoming movie Bruno. Glancing at Rottentomatoes.com, I already see one reviewer who blasted Transformers for being offensive and racist yet that same reviewer likes Bruno calling it “offensive, but funny!” Talk about hypocrisy.

Ignore the critics - go see Transformers - it’s a great popcorn summer movie!

My wife and I took our 7 year-old Transformers fanatic to the first show available. Within 5 minutes she and I looked at each other and discussed leaving. Every other word was a curse word and the “mindless violence” was not humorous at all. I have to admit our kids hear curse words from all areas in their life but a movie specifically targeted at children SHOULD NOT be so vulgar. Also, the “implied” sexuality in the sequal was not “implied” enough. We believe the producers knew that throwing together a bunch of special effect robot violence and Megan Fox running around looking hot would sell a butt load of tickets. Guess they were right because the movie was a major disappointment.

— Lindell
1:14 pm July 1st, 2009

Lindell - why would you take a 7 year-old to a PG-13 movie? You can’t criticize the movie for that. Check the ratings next time before you go to the movies.

That’s a real shocker. Here’s a pro-tip, pay no attention to the “blockbusters” they are all crap. Seriously, the majority of movies in the theater are there just to make money off of the mindless droves of the american public who’ll pay $10 to see anything, even Snowdogs.

The general public will buy anything, just ram it down their throats enough and you’re good to go. Joe, give us some reviews on real movies.

I don’t know if critics really are in touch. One only has to view Babel, Benjamin Button, if you can last three hours, and other Oscar nominated films. Generally boring and pointless.

2:25 pm July 1st, 2009

I’m with some others that have posted here… I liked the movie because it was what I was in the mood to see. I didn’t feel like seeing an independent, tear-jerker, I wanted to see my favorite childhood show (well, 2nd behind Scooby Doo) on the big screen with stuff being blown up by alien robots and Megan Fox, of course.

So take critics for what they are worth… their own opinion about the movie. Not that its wrong, but I like different types of movies than critics do. So it won’t win an Oscer (with the exception of Special Effects awards), but I got out of it what I wanted.

Tex

So you are saying the film was not targeting young children? I guess there are a lot of 13+ year old buying kid’s meals at Burger King and Tranformer toys at Wal-Mart. Ratings are what they are. The original was also PG-13 and it was a great movie for young and old. Thanks for the parenting advise though. I totally needed it.

3:52 pm July 1st, 2009

I liked the movie. It wsa by no means a great movie but it was definitely a fun movie.

My problem (and yes I’m nit-picking) is that Michael Bay used some obvioius plot tricks to force the story, and they showed. I don’t know who’s reading so I won’t give out spoilers, I’ll just say that there were 3 or 4 points where a small change would’ve greatly improved the plot.

If you go in expecting cinematic excellence you will be disappointed. If however you go in expecting a summer thrill ride and little depth you’ll be fine.

What people fail to understand is that although they still make Transformers toys for kids today, these movies are not made for the 7 year old of today, but for the 7 year old kid of 20 some odd years ago that were shocked, but thought it kicked a** to hear Ultra Magnus say ” Open, dammit” when trying to use the matrix in the original cartoon movie.

I usually like the movies that the critics don’t. Does that make me strange? Probably in the eyes of the critic. That’s what makes this world so different. You can get paid to say a bunch of crap (wrap you guys up with meteorologists) and we can go pay to enjoy it. Bottom line is like the weather guy no one totally pays attention to you when you speak.

The thing I really liked about the first Transformers movie was: it was clean, made in the style of a 50s or 60s movie. But Transformers 2 had some of the most crude and offensive language I’ve ever seen in a “children’s” movie. And like a lot of critics, I’m asking, “Where is the plot, the story, the moral?”

Joe Williams has an obvious political ax to grind, and the sparks fly in most of his reviews. He has a huge positive bias for foreign film, giving them top marks when he surely knows that FEW American viewers will find the films entertaining.

The most recent example of this is his “top pick” for “The Seventh Seal,” a 1957 black and white Swedish movie by Ingmar Bergman. Well, “Seventh Seal” (a film I have seen) is understandably fodder for film students, but it’s hard for me to imagine why anyone without a huge bias in favor of foreign film would recommend it to complete strangers, much less the strangers that are directly responsible for his paycheck. I would sooner recommend the viewing audience go out and get a case of the clap than go see this slow, boring, B&W, foreign language POS film. It really isn’t a terribly important film anymore, anyway: “7th Seal” is less relevant to contemporary film than is “Porkies,” and any pseudo-intellectual worth his salt has probably already seen it (and attempted to rationalize why they enjoyed it).

The popularity of Siskel and Ebert was due in large part to their ability to summarize what movie audiences would like or dislike about the movies they reviewed. They didn’t always agree, and they did manage to work in some intellectual insights into aspects of the movies that a non-film buff might miss, but at the end of the reviews you had a pretty good idea if the film would be worth your time and money. Not with Joe Williams.

Few people read Williams’ reviews for the same reason fewer and fewer people are reading the “Post Dispatch,” generally. Readers want better balanced and more insightful reporting, and they aren’t getting it here.

BTW, I saw “Transformers/Revenge” this weekend and reconsidered Williams’ leftist rant on it in an even harsher light. There were aspects to the movie that were far more relevant to the movie going public than the few facets he focused on in the review. Profanity, drug use and underage drinking, and poor parenting, to put them in a few short words. More positively, Megan Fox is indeed one of the most beautiful women to be in movies since… well, ever. Overall, the movie entertained and certainly exceeded expectations. Thumbs up!

“Criticism is necessary and useful; it is often indispensable; but it
can never take the place of action, or be even a poor substitute for
it. The function of the mere critic is of very subordinate usefulness.
It is the doer of deeds who actually counts in the battle for life, and
not the man who looks on and says how the fight ought to be fought,
without himself sharing the stress and the danger.”

I really liked the movie, was there a lot of story and talking in the movie? Not really but here is the thing it is a movie about Giant Robots fighting its not a movie about a detective super hero or a character driven love story.

Way I think of movies is this is the movie fun to watch? If yes then its worth the money. Transformers 2 was well worth my money.

Okay this one part just bugs me… at the very beginning of the movie one of the autobots goes, “He’s here, I can smell him”. Now I don’t know about you, but I never knew robots had a sense of smell. Just most of the lines in the movie were terrible, I was expecting a lot better.

10:52 pm July 1st, 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was exactly what it was made to be, an entertaining action movie with awesome special effects, sexual shots of megan fox, and bits of humor built in. Really what else did people expect. Anyone complaining about it clearly had unreasonable expectations about the movie. The sequel didn’t receive the same set up as The Dark Knight. The story-line from the first movie didn’t set up for a deep/intellectual movie. As some people have been saying check your brain at the door in a bad way, yes its not a movie that makes you think but its not supposed too. If your for a entertaining movie with alot of bang and action then I highly recommend it.

Movie Critics, like Liberal Politicians, are FAR out of touch with the tastes of the average American. They want to be a member of “The Club”,and spend alot of time sipping wine and eating cheese at the the “right” parties so they will be noticed.

— James
2:25 pm July 2nd, 2009

Joe, you are too kind to give this movie mixed reviews. It was terrible. I really enjoyed the first movie. Not too smart, but alot of fun. A number of holes run through the plot of “Revenge of the Fallen”, and there is an utter lack of comic relief that was present in the first. The large number of sexual references were gratuitous and lead to some awkward moments when taking anyone near the rated age of PG-13. (The worst thing to ever happen to movies. Make it an “R”, or make it “PG”. Summer movies are not art.) The “decepticon” female after SHia, obvious BattleStar Galactica rip-off from Michael Bay-NAL, how come Bumble Bee could not detect her when she forces her way in for a ride from the frat party? If Jet Fire is such an ancient, why is he in the form of a Jet that had been commisioned in the last 40 years?

Joe does not suck, if you liked this movie…your taste sucks. Do us all a favor, stop having kids and drink some Drano.
