Damon’s whistleblower flick “The Informant” turns out to be a comedy
I like politically correct, corporate bashing dramas as much as the next critic, but really, after Oscar bait like “The Insider,” “Erin Brockovich” and “Michael Clayton,” what’s left to be said? That’s why the idea of Matt Damon gaining 30 pounds to play a whistleblower in an agribusiness flick called “The Informant” didn’t exactly sound revolutionary, even though the movie was in the capable hands of director Steven Soderbergh. But wait! The simple addition of an exclamation point in the title was the first clue of something that the trailer now confirms: It’s a comedy.
“The Informant!” which was largely filmed in central Illinois, with a brief detour to Lambert airport in St. Louis, is the true story of an executive at Archer Daniels Midland who squeals to the feds about a price-fixing scheme. But the guy has seen a few too many cloak-and-dagger movies, and he can’t help channeling his inner George Clooney.
“The informant!,” which co-stars Kirkwood native Scott Bakula, is set to open nationwide on Oct. 9. If this trailer is any indication, it could be a hoot:

This one looks like a winner…
