Robert McNamara died this week. The former head of Ford Motors and the World Bank was the defense secretary under presidents Kennedy and Johnson–and thus the architect of the Vietnam War.

More than 50,000 brave Americans died in the that conflict, and in the last years of his life, McNamara acknowledgd that his policies had been flawed.

In light of our ongoing entanglements in the Middle East, McNamara’s reflection are newly pertinent. I recommend renting “The Fog of War,” particularly for the sections where he talks about civilian casualties.
