Support the home team: “Streetballers” at Tivoli and Ronnie’s, Friday

It’s rare for a locally made film to screen for paying customers, and rarer for it to screen at more than one venue. But the basketball flick “Streetballers” is an honorable exception, a home-grown product that deserves a naitional roll-out. It opens at the Tivoli and Ronnie’s theaters on Friday, and if it does well, it could hit the road.

The producers’ goal is to score the highest per-screen average of any film in America, so Hollywood will take notice and offer a distribution deal. That’s aiming high, but I don’t underestimate this team.

Director and co-star Matt Krentz has spent years honing “Streetballers,” a story about two St. Louisans–one Irish, one black–who form an unlikely friendship on the illegal streetball circuit. Former Mizzou basketbal star Jimmy McKinney plays the teammate, and the movie’s got a raw authenticity. It won the audience choice award at last year’s St. Louis International Film Festival.

Nelly and the St. Lunatics have lent their music to a trailer. Here it is:

There’s a star-studded VIP preview at Ronnie’s on Thursday night (but of course, you’d already know that if you were a VIP); and an after-party at the Pepper Lounge. We’ll have a review of “Streetballers” in the Friday Post-Dispatch. For more information about the move and the local screenings, visit the movie’s Web site.

Just support it. It was filmed in STL with all STL actors. Dont hate because you missed out on something that has a chance to “make it”.

I was at the premiere and the movie was excellent! The St. Louis scenes were amazing and the music was tough. Sarah, the love interest in the film is stunningly beautiful in person. No Joke! There’s a photo of her in the Photos section of STLTODAY at the premiere. I hear she got some commercials airing in LA…wish they were being shown here instead. I’ll be looking out for her and the woman who played Auntie in other films; locally filmed or not.

The female actress, Adrienne Perez, graduated from the high school I attended. I remember seeing her in all of our school plays/musicals. It’s really nice to see someone who went there do something with their lives other than pop out bastard children and get addicted to heroin.

Amused –
um… dude, what High School did you go to? Are you addicted to heroin because if you are there are programs. It’s super easy to kick. Sorry your life hasn’t turned out that well.

In all seriousness, the movie was great. Congrats to everyone involved.

Tommy-

St. Elizabeth Academy, thus I am no “dude.” My life is turning out well, and so I can look back at all those silly little girls and laugh, now. Also, why would I be making fun of heroin addicts if I was one? Get some critical thinking skills.

Anyways, I would highly recommend this film.
