The Pixar animation studio started its unbroken run of critical and box office successes with “Toy Story” in 1995. Along with its 1999 sequel, the yarn about a cowboy doll (Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks) and an astronaut action figure (Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen) who vie for a boy’s affections is still revered as one of the great family entertainments. Now a new generation can enjoy the “Toy Story” saga on the big screen. Starting Friday, the two films are screening in theaters as a limited-engagement double feature–in 3-D.

Since the three-dimensionality was added long after the films were completed, don’t expect in-your-face effects. I previewed the double feature last weekend, and the 3-D neither added nor detracted too much. Both “Toy story” movies remain great, with an attention to toy-box details that will warm the heart of any Baby Boomer.

The total running time for the double feature, including a ten-minute intermission and trivia quiz, is about three hours. If you can get your kids to sit still that long, someday they will thank you for it.

Here’s the trailer for the two-fer:

(By the way, “Toy Story 3,” also in 3-D, is slated for release in June 2010.)

Question about viewing 3D movies in St. Louis. I’ve read that 3D films require about 20% more projector light to keep the movies from seeming darker than a non-3D version. Are there theatres in the St. Louis area better equipped to show 3D movies better than others? Thanks!
