Last week, Paramount Pictures announced that it was delaying the release of Martin Scorsese’s new movie “Shutter Island” from Oct. 3 to Feb. 19. Although the gothic thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a detective investigating the escape of a female mental patient has the pedigree of an award contender, Paramount has decided to focus its Oscar promotions on two other releases: Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” and Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air” (most of which was filmed in St. Louis).

But now there’s some good news for America’s most esteemed film director. HBO has greenlit his new TV series “Boardwalk Empire,” starring Steve Buscemi as the kingpin of Atlantic City in the 1920s. Scorsese has directed a pilot and will supervise at least ten more episodes, which are expected to premiere in 2010.

In the meantime, here’s the creepy trailer for “Shutter Island”:

Steve Buscemi as the kingpin of Atlantic City in the 1920s?

What was he the kingpin of? Miss America pagents, penny arcades and pier jumping horses?

I can take him in small doses (Mr. Pink, Fargo) but a lead?
