Boston Indoor Highlights
Kathleen Nelson
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Though the season is young, a couple records fell at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games over the weekend.

  • Meserat Defar of Ethiopa crushed the women’s indoor world record in the 2-mile, finishing in 9 minutes, 10.50 seconds. The time smashed the world record of 9:23.38, set by Regina Jacobs in 2002. Defar owes a debt of gratitude to Marina Muncan, who served as a rabbit for the first 1,400 meters. Kim Smith of New Zealand also broke the record, finishing second in 9:13.94. American Jen Rhines was  third in 9:35.29.
  • Craig “Buster” Mottram of Australia won the men’s 3,000 meters in 7:34.50. He broke Haile Gebrselassie’s U.S. All-Comers record of 7:35.25 and the Australian record of 7:39.24. Markos Geneti of Ethiopia was second in 7:41.81.
  • OK, he’s not much of a runner, but we’ll give a special shoutout to Mizzou grad Christian Cantwell, who will be inducted into the University of Missouri Hall of Fame next week. Cantwell won the shot put with a throw of 20.97 meters/68 feet, 9.75 inches on the very first throw of the competition.
