Missouri’s first sub 4-minute outdoor mile _ for Brigette

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

We’re a bit stunned that in the 54 years since Roger Bannister first broke the 4-mile barrier, no one has broken the mark outdoors in Missouri. The organizers of the Brigette Schutzman Festival of Miles hope to end the drought.

Organized by Big River Running, the attempt is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. April 28 at St. Louis University High as part of a series of mile races for junior boys and girls as well as masters’ men and women. The races will be followed by a dinner, the proceeds of which will benefit the Schutzman family.

Schutzman, a runner at St. Louis University who was seriously injured in a car crash Dec. 31. She has undergone a lengthy rehab near her home in Indianapolis but has vowed to complete her running career and get her nursing degree from SLU. We’ve documented the series of minor miracles in her recovery. She’s talking and recently took her first steps.

Runners tentatively scheduled to compete in the elite mile include:

  • Blake Boldon- USA, Saucony, 3:59 miler, US Olympic Trials Qualifier (1500)
Jordan Fife- USA, Team Indiana Elite, 3:59 miler, US Olympic Trials Qualifier (Steeplechase)

Great idea. I like the way Big River thinks and what they do for St. Louis Running.

Thanks for sharing.

I”m with you. The Big River Dudes help people discover — or rediscover — a passion for running or walking. They’ve managed to find a way to be inclusive while carving out a niche for elite, post-collegiate runners in a very short time.

My only complaint about the BRR guys is that they’ve taken away most of my chances of age group placing! And I was oh so close until they came along! :-)

We are very excited. There is very little coverage for events like this. I have 4 kids (7year old thru 16 year old) who like to run. To be able to see an event like this in their hometown is rare. Running is one bonds they can continue for life.
