We’re a bit stunned that in the 54 years since Roger Bannister first broke the 4-mile barrier, no one has broken the mark outdoors in Missouri. The organizers of the Brigette Schutzman Festival of Miles hope to end the drought.
Organized by Big River Running, the attempt is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. April 28 at St. Louis University High as part of a series of mile races for junior boys and girls as well as masters’ men and women. The races will be followed by a dinner, the proceeds of which will benefit the Schutzman family.
Schutzman, a runner at St. Louis University who was seriously injured in a car crash Dec. 31. She has undergone a lengthy rehab near her home in Indianapolis but has vowed to complete her running career and get her nursing degree from SLU. We’ve documented the series of minor miracles in her recovery. She’s talking and recently took her first steps.
