Follow the Boston Marathon on Versus or free online

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

We’ve already acknolwedged Versus for its wire-to-wire coverage of the Boston Marathon on Monday. But Patriots Day isn’t a holiday in these parts, so you might be stuck behind your desk and nowhere near a TV. Besides, Versus is unlikely to mention any of the 150 or so runners from the area participating; they’ll focus their coverage on the favorites. So, to follow the locals, here are a couple options:

1. World Championship Sports Network (WCSN), will broadcast the race beginning at 8:25 a.m. St. Louis time. Just log onto WCSN.com, but do it early. Usually, these sites are inundated at the last minute. Normally a pay-per-view site, the webcast will be free, thanks to the largesse of marathonguide.com and adidas.

2. The Boston Athletic Association will publish every 5K split of every runner on its website. The only catch is that you have to wait until race day, Monday, to sign in at the marathon’s website. On race day, just enter the name or bib number of the runner or runners you want to follow.

Happy viewing.

Is Al Trautwig calling this one too? How long will it take to get Phil Leggett and Paul Sherwin up to speed? :-)

I searched the Versus site as thoroughly as I could and found NO mention of who would be commentating. But, as Obi Wan Kenobi would say, “I feel a disturbance in the force.” Since Trautwig is in town for the Olympic Trials, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he’d stick around for the next day’s race. He has a good working relationship with Versus, with the Tour and the Paris-Dakkar Rally.
At a marathon, Phil wouldn’t get the chance to do the frenetic, jumbled, breathless commen-TA-ting that is his trademark in a sprint finish. But, he and Paul certainly could fill up two hours of air time with more literate remarks and more sophisticated banter than we get from Trautwig and someone like Ed Eyestone.
