Area triathletes hit the water, bike and pavement across the country
The more triathlons you schedule, the more St. Louisan triathletes you discover.
Olympic hopeful Sarah Haskins will compete Sunday at the ITU World Cup championships in Vancouver. The most prominent names in the sports will compete in the pro division of the race, which will attract more than 3,000 competitors. Haskins and the rest of the elites will use Vancouver as a tune-up for the World Cup event June 22 in Des Moines, the last chance for her to qualify for the team in Beijing.
A bunch of other area triathlets will migrate to San Francisco to compete in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon on the same day. Among them is Jillian Petersen, who left St. Louis to train in Colorado Springs and took first in the Mazatlan Pan American Cup in April.
Also look for Peter Boumgarden, a Ph. D. student at Washington University by day. Boumgarden was first out of the water at teh 2007 Memphis in May triathlon and, according to local triathlon guru John Lynch, finished 10th overall at College Nationals in Tuscaloosa.
There’s one other story to follow: Jeff and Austin Hindman, the father-and-son duo also competing. We brought you their story in a column a couple weeks ago. Austin is just 9 and will be the youngest competitor at this odd race, which consists of a 1.5-mile swim from the prison to San Fran, 18-mile bike and 8-mile run through the hilly streets.
