Ethiopian sets women’s 5,000-meter world record

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia set a women’s world record in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 14 minutes 11.15 seconds at the ExxonMobil Bislett Games in Oslo.
But what do you make of her post-race comments to reporters?
“I was trying my best and I knew I was going to break the record with two laps to go. I was sure,” she said, then added for dramatic effect, “with two laps left.
“The early part of the race was pretty good, but at 3,000 meters, we were a little behind so then I had to catch up on the pace. I could have run faster if the pacing was a little better.”
Could have run faster?!?!?
OK, we grant that good competition and steady pacing are essential to most record-setting attempts. But is she slapping around her competition a little too hard?
Or, is these just words befitting a champion?

She is a beast. E. Africa is king when it comes to running.

OK, my friend. The first part of your comment is fine, but I had to edit that last part. Be civil.
