Running USA’s state of the sport, part II: Portrait of a runner

Running USA released the second of three parts of its state of the sport survey.
The group estimates there were at lease 10 million core runners, defined as buying 3 pairs of running shoes a year, running on the road or on trails and entering at least one race a year.
The quick sketch shows that the typical runner is middle aged, well-educated and affluent, which is good news for running specialty stores.
The average female runner is:
- 39.4 years old
- 62 percent are married; 64 percent have no children in the household.
- 50 percent had an individual income of $50,000 or more.
- 45 percent had a household income of $100,000 or more
- 79 percent have college degrees.
- 67 percent have run for 5 years or more
The average male runner:
- Is 45 years old
- 74 percent are married.
- 55 percent have no children in the household.
- 50.6 percent had an individual income of $75,000 or more.
- 57 percent had a household income of $100,000 or more
- 80 percent have a college degree.
- 60 percent have run for 10 years or more.
