Running USA’s state of the sport shows healthy growth
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Running USA has released its rather lengthy report on the state of the sport. Part 1 deals with the status of the manufacturing and vendors. Some of the findings:
- Despite the recession, running seems to be in pretty good shape. Sales of shoes were up 5 percent, though many at the low end.
- The share of sales from specialty stores declined slightly, which seems odd given tehe proliferation of specialty stores here. They seem to be losing ground to those pesky Internets.
- Sales of running apparel, though, jumped 25 percent in a year. I guess everyone’s finally giving up on cotton T-shirts and going to technical gear, though I fervently hope the bulk of the gain IS NOT in those simpy crops and briefs marketed to women. No reason to dress like a hoochie when you run.
