Running USA’s state of the sport shows healthy growth

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Running USA has released its rather lengthy report on the state of the sport. Part 1 deals with the status of the manufacturing and vendors. Some of the findings:

  1. Despite the recession, running seems to be in pretty good shape. Sales of shoes were up 5 percent, though many at the low end.
  2. The share of sales from specialty stores declined slightly, which seems odd given tehe proliferation of specialty stores here. They seem to be losing ground to those pesky Internets.
  3. Sales of running apparel, though, jumped 25 percent in a year. I guess everyone’s finally giving up on cotton T-shirts and going to technical gear, though I fervently hope the bulk of the gain IS NOT in those simpy crops and briefs marketed to women. No reason to dress like a hoochie when you run.

Here’s part 1 in its entirety.
