June 3 is National Running Day: Why not here?

Got an email from Running USA, proclaiming June 3 as National Running Day. It listed events in about a dozen major cities, designed to promote running.

No events listed for St. Louis.

I”m not faulting the usual race organizers in the area. They have their hands full. Big River just wrapped up the Festival of Miles and is in the middle of the South City Racing Series.  Fleet Feet is in the midst of summer speed work and gearing up for Lewis and Clark training. The track club has its track series. And GO! is gearing up for its youth and summer track series and the Major League Baseball All-Star charity runs.

So, no one is in a position to step up.  Maybe that shows how running thrives here, and perhaps St. Louis doens’t need a running day. Any thoughts? Shall we celebrate quietly on our own?

I know I will make sure I get a long run in that day!

I think I’ll break out of the doldrums of the neighborhood run and go somewhere special. Queeny Park, maybe.
