There is a lot of advertising and promotion for this race. I looked at the race route. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/stl/fan_forum/asg/asg_funrun.jsp
Odd for a 5K to be point-to-point going from Busch Stadium to Convention Center. Lousy for runners. That’s several blocks spread. It works for St. Pat’s which is a huge downtown event with the Parade following. I can’t see any point going point-to-point on this one. I can only guess they’re using runners to draw attention to their “FanFest” event at the convention center. They don’t want sweaty runners going into their event. So what’s the point? I feel used.
The GO! organization is helping on the local end. I’m guessing that the organizers figure that people will either park close to the start or close to the finish. I wonder if there’s a happy medium parking lot?
The other option would be to take MetroLink. You could get off at the Stadium and return using the Convention Center stop.
Yea, what am I complaining about? My bad. Another race for us to run. That’s good. I don’t want to be the guy who insists every parking space should be next to the front door so I don’t have to walk.
The part that tickles me: People who sign up for the 1.1-mile event probably will walk/run farther getting to and from their cars than they will in the race. That’s OK. All for a good cause.
I hear people have been calling the Cardinals wondering if they have to do the run/walk to receive the medal & t-shirt. C’mon, guys! Can’t even walk a mile?
I’ve heard they received a few calls. Consider where they’re coming from. They’re used to attending Bobblehead Night at the Stadium, walking in and getting their premium hours before the game.
This procedure probably seems counterintuitive to them.
But I agree with you.
Kathleen - this is probably not the place for it, but wanted to let you know that I’m a fan of your column. I appreciate your support mostly of running & biking, but also for other less-publicized sports.
