St. Louis native Sarah Haskins was listed among the favorites for the HyVee Triathlon, the richest event on the International Triathlon Union circuit, Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. Prize money equals $1 million, and Haskins has been the strongest American performer at the last two events.
Her to 10 finsihes have been impressive, considering they were her only two events of the season, after undergoing nerve surgery in her leg in March. The heavy favorites for the overall title, though, are the Australian Emmas, Snowsill and Moffat. Snowsill won the Olympic gold medal; Moffat won last week in Washington, D.C., where Haskins finished fourth. The event consists of a 1.5K (.9-mile) swim, 40k (25-mile) bike and 10K (6.2-mile) run.
An extra feature of the event this year is the World Team Competition, which matches two women and two men from the same country, scheduled for Sunday. Haskins, a graduate of Parkway South, will team with Sarah Groff, Hunter Kemper and Jarrod Shoemaker.
