Gay questionable for 200; East St. Louis’ Dawn Harper ready
Tyson Gay (right), who finished second to Usain Bolt in the 100 meters, said he might not be ready for a rematch in the 200 meters. By finishing in 9.71, Gay set an American record in the 100 but couldn’t match Bolt’s record time of 9.58.
Gay entered the meet with a sore groin that has bothered him for weeks, never brought it up through the 100 but seemed pessimistic when questioned Monday about the 200, the preliminaries of which are the first event on Tuesday’s schedule.
Of area interest Tuesday is the women’s 100 meter hurdles, in which East St. Louis native Dawn Harper owns the third-fastest time this year, 12.53 seconds. Harper, the gold medalist in Beijing, is scheduled to start in Lane 1 in the opening heat, which can be seen live as part of Versus’ coverage at noon.
