Zac Freudenburg, a member of the 180 Energy Runners and winner of the GO! St. Louis Marathon, shattered the world stroller marathon record, winning the Tulsa Route 66 Marathon outright in 2 hours, 32 minutes, 10 second. Freudenburg was pushing his 11-month-old son, Liam.

Michael Wardian, the former world record holder, finished second overall in 2:34:37, also improving on the previous mark of 2:42:21 that he set in 2007. The pair raced together for more than half the race. Freudenburg surged ahead with about 10 miles to go, opening a 30-second lead about 8 miles from the finishing line.

John Aerni-Flessner, Freudenburg’s 180 teammate, finished third in 2:37:19. He was not pushing a stroller.

180 Energy Runner Colleen Casey placed first overall woman in the half marathon. And 180 Energy Runner Sean Birren placed 2nd overall male in the half marathon!!! Teammate Mike Aitken placed 4th overall in the half.

Might want to fix that headline. It was TEN minutes, not NINE.

Yes, it was 10 minutes, and I have changed it. Thanks.

How come this is not on the front page of the Post Dispatch (with a nice photo)?
Breaking a world record is a very big deal and the metro area should know and be proud about it.

I disagree with Ron’s suggestion of it being on the cover of sports. I knew nothing of a record before and until the sport of “running pushing child” is frequently contested I don’t think it’s quite worthy. That said, I would love to see video of the incredible effort and I think it is worthy of “news of the weird” on ESPN SportsCenter.

I was there - routing on my kids. I’m from the Tulsa area - comments on this blog didn’t make sense to me. There were many reporters and tv cameras all over the place and it did make front page of tulsa world. The race did make the news; I think every station carried it. Zac had lots of support - you could tell his support team because they all wore orange hoodies. There must have been close to 50 people there - sure made an impression. Running isn’t as popular in Tulsa - its more about football. So, even if your newspaper did not carry it, it still was impressive seeing everyone from St. Louis there. In Ok, orange usually means college.

It was great having the 180 Energy Team and everyone else from the St. Louis area down for the Route 66 Marathon again. The stroller race was great fun and Zac’s run was incredible! They came flying around the corner so fast we barely got the finisher tape out in time for them to win the marathon. Thanks for coming and we hope to see you again next year!
