When the game of golf ceases to matter
As many of you already know, Amy Mickelson,
wife of Phil Mickelson, was diagnosed with breast cancer on Wednesday. Phil has taken leave from the PGA Tour and will probably be gone for a while.
I’d like to take a moment to put Amy in my prayers in hopes of successful treatments. She and her husband are active in many charities that assist needy children in the San Diego area, where Phil is from.
Had this tragedy not struck, Phil would have been defending his crown at next week’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
It’s times like these that remind us how much golf is just a game in this thing we call life.
Amy, here’s to a speedy recovery. Phil, here’s to much strength for your family, and hopefully we’ll see you on the links real soon.

Assistant Business Editor Irvin Harrell is what you might call a "weekend warrior" when it comes to the game of golf. His mantra: good courses, good prices and good times. And he's cool with sharing good info on the local golf scene.
