St. Louisan wins Crump Cup in N.J.
If you get out to The Country Club of St. Albans this week for the 2009 USGA Men’s State Team Championship, you’ll get to catch Skip Berkmeyer of St. Louis competing.
Berkmeyer birdied 18 on Sunday at Pine Valley Golf Club to win the 85th Annual Crump Memorial Tournament. Berkmeyer is no stranger to St. Albans, having won the Metropolitan Open Championship there.
For those of you unfamiliar with Pine Valley, the exclusive course, is set in Camden County, N.J., and was designed in the early 1900s by George Arthur Crump, a hotelier. At the time of its opening, it was considered the most difficult golf course in the world. The Crump Cup was establish in 1922.
Crump mandated in the course’s construction that:
- No hole should be laid out parallel to the next
- No more than two consecutive holes should play in the same direction
- Players shouldn’t be able to see any hole other than the one they were playing
