15 courses, no greens fees till end of 2010
Not sure if you folks have heard of the 314golf.com players card, but you might want to give it a gander — especially if you like to play a lot and like to play a variety of courses.
For about 80 bucks, you can get free greens fees at 15 area courses until December 2010. All you have to do is pay the cart fees, which range between $17.50 and $7.50. I don’t know about you, but it seems like a cheap way to play some quality golf in the St. Louis area.
Among the courses you can play: Gateway National, Pevely Farms, Stonewolf, Far Oaks, Clinton Hill and Normandie. The only possible drawbacks I might see from this bargain is that the tee times have be after 1 p.m. and can only be made 24 hours in advance. But I probably won’t let that stop me. I just need to get few golfing buddies on board and it will be a done deal.

Assistant Business Editor Irvin Harrell is what you might call a "weekend warrior" when it comes to the game of golf. His mantra: good courses, good prices and good times. And he's cool with sharing good info on the local golf scene.
Uh, if it costs 80 bucks the greens fees aren’t “free”. Free means I walk in and they let me play and it costs me nothing. The term “free” is greatly misused, mostly by advertisers! Shipping is NEVER free. It may be “included” in the price you quote, but it ain’t free. Everyone thinks the common man is an idiot.
they also don’t tell you that you are thought of as scum by the club pros and are treated as such with the 314golf card, I dont know why the club pro’s think that the course that they working at is theirs.
RichT,
Your comment is well taken. But if you were to play the courses on the list just once, the card would more than pay for its self.
Rich,
I take it you’ve had one of these cards. Did you complain at all about the crappy treatment?
Bring back the Bogeyman.
In regards to Rich’s comment about the 314 golf card and being treated like scum by the pro’s at these courses for using the card. The card is distributed by Walter’s Golf Management and I believe is intended for use on only their managed courses. So if the pro’s at Walter’s managed courses are treating the customers like scum for using something initiated by the people that pay their salaries I’m sure Walters would want to know something like that. The thing you might want to remember also is some of these guys are frustrated Touring pro wannabe’s who couldn’t make the cut in the lowest of mini tour events, working bad hours for a worse salary and would probably treat you the same way regardless if you used the 314 card or not.
I’ve looked at the card a few times and could never justify buying into the program. Reasons:
1) I usually walk. Forcing me to rent a cart makes it a far less attractive deal to me.
2) I can only play these courses on weekends and the “after 1:00″ feature makes it far less attractive. With the 24 hour notice feature on tee times, it is difficult to set up a group of friends. How many people can commit if they don’t have a clue about when the round will start? Married friends rarely have the ability to openly commit like that so late in the day.
3) In the past my father was a card holder and the 1:00 tee time rule isn’t realistic. Either most courses are knocking it back much further or they are giving special deals to friends to book prior to the 24 hour notice period. When my dad had the card it was routine to call the day before and find they were all booked up until 3:00 or later. Making it difficult to lock in that you’d even get 18 holes in before dark.
