As of this morning, Anheuser-Busch is owned by InBev. The companies closed on the transaction today. At least in the beer industry, it’s a new world out there. We’ll be following all the upcoming developments as St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch merges into Belgium-based InBev.

Unfortunately, Lager Heads is traveling in California today and tomorrow, but our friends at the Post-Dispatch are covering the story. You can read more about it here.

Interesting: As of Thursday, the combined company will trade under the new ticker symbol ABI on the Euronext Brussels stock exchange. We’ll keep track of the other changes to come.

Well I quess SAM ADAMS can now lay claim to being the largest American Brewer . Just a few short years ago the once mighty AB really laid it on thick when SAB bought Miller Brewing. How do you feel now? Are you crying in your beer now? They always say what goes around comes around. I hope the windows in the office building don’t open. I would hate to see anyone jump out. The new logo looks like the eagle is flying away to a better place. I hear parking meters have been ordered for the parking lots. Enjoy and have a MillerCoors product to show your support.

Don S.–so you have an axe to grind against AB–I think we got that. Why? Yes, AB was acquired. Yes, there were issues that allowed it to be ripe for acquisition. Could management have done a better job? No doubt. So you’re laughing and ridiculing all of the workers that will pay the price? Classy, very classy. But you’re right–we all had it easy. No one ever did any work. AB got to 100 million barrels by accident. Your company should be so successful by “accident.” Dude, you’d need to go up about 3 floors just to get to the gutter. Hope you’re enjoying yourself.

I’m also curious as to your anger Don. Perhaps you didn’t get any of the money from AB’s charitable donations? Perhaps you just like Miller beer? (it’s okay, many people like that pee-water)

Anheuser-Busch took care of it’s employees for many, many years and they had some of the most dedicated workers on the planet. During the down times, they still had great health benefits, free beer, and great perks. Sure there were labor disputes over the years and the upper managers made a lot of money and could be quite arrogant at times. However, when you got a job at AB, you were “king” in your neighborhood. Everyone wanted to work there because of how great employees had it. The holiday parties were some of the best in the world. I can still remember Hootie and the Blowfish performing a few feet in front of the dance floor at a party years ago. Health benefits and pensions were tops and when you got your job at AB, you were set for life. Make no mistake, however, the employees worked hard and are the best in the business.

Brito and his henchmen will operate the company as a business. Gone will be the free beer, parties, and great benefits. The parks will be sold, super bowl ads a thing of the past, and the Clydesdales turned into glue (okay, speaking metaphorically here). Offices will give way to cubicles and Employee Appreciation Day will consist of employees sending in cards to Brito thanking him for their jobs and begging to stay on for just another year. Colleges placement programs will get a boost, however, because Brito will chase all the seasoned employees away or lay them off, only to replace them with cheap college labor.

While many companies already have no holiday parties, free beer, or even Clydesdales, there were no companies quite like Anheuser-Busch.

I’ll be finishing the last of my Bud Lights soon and will switch to a truly American beer like Schlafly or Sam Adams. Before I do, I’ll propose one last toast to what was one of the best companies in the world, Anheuser-Busch.

Here’s a crazy idea: why don’t we buy our beer based on the TASTE instead of looking at which company/brewer makes it.
