Blackstone Group, a big private equity group, is looking into a possible deal to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev’s U.S. theme parks, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.
The world’s biggest brewer has been looking for months to find a buyer for its theme parks, which include SeaWorld and Busch Gardens. A deal could help the company pay down debt from InBev’s acquisition of Anheuser-Busch last year. “No deal was expected imminently,” the Journal reported. Blackstone is no stranger to theme parks; it already owns 50 percent of Universal Orlando.
SeaWorld Orlando executives held an early-morning staff meeting today - a meeting that had become the subject of intense speculation, according to Jason Garcia, a staff writer for the Orlando Sentinel. A local TV station had reported that SeaWorld executives intended to announce that the big park had been sold. But SeaWorld said the staff meeting was instead a “regularly scheduled employee communications meeting.” Executives did not make any announcements about the ownership future of the park. From Garcia’s story:
With television satellite trucks parked outside of the resort, SeaWorld General Manager Dan Brown told employees that he would not discuss “rumors” about a potential sale of Busch Entertainment Corp. or any of its 10 theme parks and that he did not have any major announcements to make. Brown made the comments at the outset of the 8 a.m. meeting and repeated them again when asked during a question-and-answer session.
Anheuser-Busch InBev would not discuss the speculation about a potential deal, according to several reports.
Our request: If Lager Heads readers were at the meeting, can you send us a line, or comment on the blog, to let us know what happened, or about any other developments surrounding the parks? Thanks a ton. We are reachable at jmcwilliams@post-dispatch.com.

Is Grants Farm included as one of their theme parks? I remember hearing about secret talks to sell grants farm to a developer, but luckily that never happened. I fear that if they do sell the theme parks that the quality of the park will suffer.
ABInbev does not own Grant’s Farm.
Oh wow. I just looked on the county assessor page and it lists Louis B Susman as a trustee. What is he doing there???
Susman was Gussie’s attorney.
I really hate to see AB sell their parks. My family and I traveled to Orlando last year we visited both Sea World and Busch Gardens and we’re proud to be drinkers of AB products. They do so much for our military with the memorials at their theme parks that it made me proud to be American and drink American. I do drink other beers from other nations but I can honestly say that I have never had a bad AB product EVER!!!!! I have visited their theme parks for years and along with the beer tastings I found it to be a very family friendly atmosphere, I only hope the new company will keep that in mind?
Well, I guess now that you can actually buy AB stock you can once again call it American Company, Sean.
Some of the meetings have been “salary meetings”, last week were some VP meetings with the employees giving them results on employee satisfaction surveys, as far as I know, even the employees are expecting each meeting to be news.
They’ll be under new ownership by Christmas…
no clue but… i think ABI has found these parks to bring in more revenue than expected, and even though they really dont relate to the beer business, they wont be sold yet…
Of course ABInBev will sell the theme parks. They are in the beer manufactoring business, not the entertainment business.
Right you are BigBob. Theme parks are not their core business and they will be sold. And how does one reckon AB is an American beer?
