K. & M. Wallace, Schrader Racing At Talladega On Sunday?
Both Mike and Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader will attempt on Saturday to qualify for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Kenny will try to get the No. 00 Michael Waltrip-owned Champion Mortgage Toyota Camry in Sunday’s race, while Mike tries with the No. 33 Realtree Chevrolet owned by Richard Childress and Schrader will attempt with the No. 96 DLP Toyota Camry.
Rookie Michael McDowell has previously driven the No. 00 car and has five top-25 finishes from 20 starts this season. But he failed to qualify at Kansas last weekend prompting the move by Waltrip to tap Wallace. The team is 36th in the owners points standings, 29 behind owner-driver Robby Gordon, who rests in 35th. The top 35 owners at the end of the are guaranteed starting spots in the first five races for the 2009 season.
“We have a singular focus with the No. 00 team now and that is to get it in the top 35 owner’s points when the checkered flag falls at Homestead-Miami (on Nov. 16),” Waltrip said in a release. “This is not about an individual, it is about an organization. Kenny has a lot of experience restrictor plate racing and a lot of friends who trust him, which is critical at the race. He has a great record at Talladega and we felt like he was our best shot at scoring maximum points.
“We’re going to make the same evaluation for the remaining 2008 Sprint Cup races. That could include multiple drivers based on their experiences at particular tracks. Teams have done this at road course events and we have the flexibility to do this with the remaining oval races.”
Kenny Wallace has two top five and six top 10 finishes in 23 starts at Talladega. His last start at Talladega was April 29, 2007 when he raced for Furniture Row. He started sixth, but wound up 26th in a Chevrolet. He has raced one time this season, the opener at Daytona where Wallace wound up 43rd racing for Furniture Row.
“Michael and I have been friends for a long time,” Wallace said in the release. “I watched him bring his vision to life and become a full-time owner. I’m proud of everything he has accomplished and I’m proud that I was able to be one of the first Cup drivers to help him. I vividly remember the small garage he worked out of before taking his organization to the top level. I’m looking forward to returning to Michael Waltrip Racing and helping the team get back inside the top 35.”
Mike Wallace has raced 16 times at Talladgea with two top 10 finishes. His last Talladega race came on Oct. 7 last year when he finished 19th in the Yates Racing M&M’s Ford.
Schrader has one win, six top five and 12 top 10 finishes and two poles from 46 starts at Talladega. His victory came on July 31, 1988 while driving the No. 25 Folger’s Coffeee Chevrolet for Rick Hendrick.
