Four-time NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon won for the first time since 2007, taking the checkered flag ahead of teammate Jimmie Johnson Sunday in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Gordon and Johnson led the charge of Hendrick Motorsports-powered cars that took four of the top six places. Tony Stewart, in his Hendrick-powered Stewart Haas Racing car, came in fourth, while Hendrick’s Mark Martin ended in sixth. (Stewart teammate Ryan Newman placed 15, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was Hendrick’s fourth finisher in 20th.)
Roush Fenway placed three drivers in the top 10, placing Greg Biffle in third, Matt Kenseth in fifth and Carl Edwards of Columbia, Mo., in 10th. Edwards, the winner in both Texas races last year, was the race leader ahead of Gordon until having issues in the pits on a stop late in the race.
Juan Pablo Montoya (seventh), Kurt Busch (eighth) and Jeff Burton also cracked the top 10. The top finishing Toyota was pole-sitter David Reutimann in 11th.
